Plantation dreams
I have been invited to an old family plantation for the Easter holiday weekend. This is a family I love and I am looking forward to it. Deep in the ACE basin, where a nature lover can dream, I look forward to calming my mind with photos and the hope of spotting an eagle.
All my life I have driven by the gates to this plantation. Big and white and woods all around, I have often wondered whose it was and what they were like. I know now that I have known this family most of my life but this is how it is done here in the south. “Understated” is the respected way and for many old families, a family plantation is a blessing where you were brought as a new baby. You grew up in the woods and you knew your land. This woman I am visiting is an amazing woman. She is a southern woman and she is rock solid. She can cook like nobody’s business, has raised two incredible boys and can kill a turkey with the best of the men(I have to say I could never do that. Don’t invite me on a hunt unless you provide me with a CPR kit so I can try and save what y’all are trying to kill). Anyway, I will be sending you thoughts and photos from deep in the cross hairs of the Ashepoo, Combahee and Edisto rivers.
I think you may see a window into why the southern people love their earth. Welcome to my Spring in the countryside outside of Charleston.
