Design Tip-Mirrors
Q: Where are good places to hang mirrors?
A. A traditional location is at the entrance to your home. Another good spot is in tight spaces. The mirror will reflect the room and makes it seem bigger—just make sure it’s reflecting something interesting and not an area of the room you’d rather keep hidden. They’re great [...]
My idea of paradise
I am dying over this chandelier that was featured in Coastal Living’s Special Islands Issue. I would love to be lounging under it enjoying the incredible view. The chandelier is a wonderful addition to the Moorish-style decor of Cap Juluca, on the island of Anguilla. I can’t believe that it weighs over 900 pounds!
Design Tip-Artwork vs. Furniture
Q: What is the correct size proportion for artwork vs. the furniture it’s over (i.e. a painting above a chair)?
A: Ideally, you want the art to be about two-thirds the size of the furniture it’s above, keeping in mind the artwork size can be collective, as in a collection rather than just one piece. [...]
Thank you Southern Living!
The talented work of Muffie Faith was featured in the March 2010 issue of Southern Living. “Muffie invited us to join her on the piazza of John and Meredith Dunnan’s circa-1810 home just off the Battery, giving us the peek at the essential elements that make a porch undeniably Charleston.” Click here to read the [...]
Design Tip-High Ceilings
Q: In rooms with high ceilings, how do I deal with all that wall space?
A: Paint the ceiling. Whatever color you have on the walls, change it a hue by adding white to the paint, and then use the new color to paint the ceiling. This brings the ceiling down and makes the space seem [...]
Design Tip-Decorating a Rental Home
Q: For those of us who rent houses, any suggestions on inexpensive ways to spruce up or personalize a house? I’m looking for ideas that are not permanent, but still make the place feel like home.
A: Invest in something you love, but that you can take with you when you leave your rental. Art is [...]
Purple Haze
I cannot stop thinking about this bedroom. It was featured in House Beautiful last month. Your bedroom should be a place of relaxation. Just like the scent of lavender, the color purple is known to induce sleep. I get relaxed just looking at this room.
We’re hooked
A good hook is hard to find. Once again House Beautiful provides us with a great reference of hooks and hangers that can instantly update a room. Some of our favorites are below.
Design Tip-Updating a room
Q: There are so many rooms in my house in need of updating. Where do I begin?
Whether it’s a cluttered mudroom or a stressful office, start with what drives you most crazy and fix that. You’ll feel better, more motivated, and able to move on to the rest of your house. If you’re hesitant about [...]
A new twist on floors
House Beautiful’s February issue features an article on the best colors to paint floors. They say it is one of the quickest and most powerful ways to makeover a room and I agree. I just wish I was bold enough to do it! I love the geometric design in the room above. The lines are [...]
