My mom was right when she told me to join the Horticultural Society when I first moved to Charleston. Of course, and on cue, I said “Mom…No.” Well, Mom was right. They can talk orchids, structure, life and laugh with the best of them all while encased in flowers.

Join me and the Horticultural Society tonight at ESD from 5-8PM. I will be there and so you should you! Mom was always right.

Here I am at 12:20am waiting on the Harry Potter movie to start! It took major convincing from my daughter Stuart to get me here. She had to bribe her little sister Beau with doing chores, front seat rights just to name a few. I love Harry and secretly I am excited. All around us are teens in black, tattoos, and LOTS of red bull being sold. There are parents of course but we are out numbered. The best is when we were headed to the car my sweet Beau grabbed my noise reduction headphones that I use on long flights…she is planning on getting some sleep!

OK so I am reading Martha Stewart’s magazine and I have to admit that she makes me insecure! She went to jail and I think she actually came out BETTER. I am not, nor have I ever been, a Martha junkie but her mag sometimes gets me in the grocery store check out. Tonight, post dinner clean up, I decided to see what she had to share. BAMM! What do you know she says she is a “shutter bug.”. Well I call myself a photographer but let’s not split hairs. She shoots with a Cannon and I with a Nikon! Ha! I got her on that one. But…she has a way of giving you doubt. The Oprah thing…”Does she know more than me…does Cannon have better features than Nikon?” See above… previous insecurity disclaimer… vis a vis Martha.

Check out her article. She plugs shutter bug a website to categorize and share your photos. I love mac and its software but hey, I admit that I don’t know how to use it all. But what I want to know is, hey Martha, who really downloads all your photos EVERY morning for you? Are you really that organized?

What is a “study”? A room? Where I study? Ugh…not MY study. Not the one I designed. It stayed frozen for many years. Books silently watching me come and go once in a while but never staying. Now, with the advice of powerful women which I hold close and cherish as my friends, I have reinvented my “study” and it is more me now. And I love being in this space that is so “me.” This very minute, I sit reading the poetry of Pablo Neruda, drinking a glass of red wine and listening to Cat Stevens before he thought he should be someone else. What a diversion, to believe you should be anything except exactly who you are. So, here I am in my study. Purple hues, my grandmother’s chairs now sleek in velvet but still, they will always be my grandmother’s chairs to me. A fine choice of words to embrace. A fine new place to study my life looking forward not back.

Animal prints are huge for Fall. They are always in the magazines as the new trend but they should be considered a timeless classic. We are seeing them everywhere from the runway to the home. Animal skin rugs are a great way to add an exotic look to your home without it being too much like a trophy room. We always enjoy a beautiful zebra skin but there are some alternates. Natural and stamped cowhides are more economical and are not sourced from an endangered species. We found some great design examples in the latest issue of ELLE DECOR.

This is my pond. It gives me so much joy. Last weekend I wanted to clean it and the fountain was sluggish. I needed to get it moving so there would be enough air for my fish. I felt it necessary that I go IN the pond. It was a sight to see! I had goggles on and in I went, swimming in circles. I am sure the fish got a laugh…it seems perfectionism knows no bounds. Not really perfectionism but love. I love my fish. I got it all straight and had fun being a kid in a pond. MY very own pond.
